Wow, here we are. It’s such a surreal feeling to see an idea I’ve been toying with for so long finally come to life. Honestly, I never pictured myself as one of those doctors who starts a blog to “share their knowledge,” but I’d be lying if I said I don’t believe I have something valuable to offer—both in terms of information and experience. Before we dive in, let me introduce myself. My name is Dr. Mojibola Orefuja. I’m a Resident Doctor working with the NHS in England, currently in my second year. I know that means I’m still relatively new to the profession, but I’m eager to share what I’ve learned so far.
How did we get here?
I graduated from The University of Manchester Medical School in 2023 after six long years of studying Medicine, and my graduation day remains one of the happiest days of my life. Ever since I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a doctor. Not just that—I’ve always felt a deep calling to support and improve the lives of patients. It’s the one thing I’ve always been completely sure about.
That said, the last two years have been challenging. I’ve struggled with the feeling that I’m not doing enough for my patients. I often sense their frustration—whether it’s because I’m slightly late for an urgent review or because I’ve prescribed something they’ve already tried. My biggest personal frustration, though, has been my inability to provide patients with clear, straightforward resources that explain their diagnoses without confusing medical jargon. In my experience, this is one of the most significant sources of frustration within healthcare, particularly in the NHS, where many patients feel left in the dark. And that realization is what led to the creation of this blog.
Let’s make a change…
I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how I, as an individual, can help shift this perception of healthcare, and I believe this blog might be a step in the right direction. I hope to act as a bridge between patients and healthcare providers by explaining common—and some not-so-common—diseases and conditions in simple, accessible terms. My goal is to leave patients feeling informed, empowered, and less overwhelmed by their health journeys.
Along the way, I plan to weave in personal experiences to make these discussions more relatable and engaging. While I wouldn’t call my life as a doctor particularly exciting, I have seen and learned things in the hospital that I think might help patients better understand why some aspects of healthcare aren’t as straightforward as we’d all like. I also want to include occasional myth-busting posts to address the abundance of misinformation out there—much of which only fuels fear or anger among patients.
I ask for your patience as we embark on this journey together. As I mentioned earlier, I’m still a relatively new doctor, and I work some pretty unhealthy hours. This blog is not only a way for me to support you as a patient but also an outlet for me as a doctor—a way to begin correcting some of the shortcomings I’ve seen in healthcare. I truly hope this marks the beginning of a meaningful partnership between us.
